Looking for cheaper gas and electricity in London? Comparing energy tariffs can help you understand whether switching supplier or changing your current deal makes sense. Check electricity and gas unit rates, daily standing charges, payment methods, fixed-term conditions and exit fees before deciding. The lowest advertised rate is not necessarily the cheapest deal for your household.
This guide is for residents of London, including Camden, Westminster, Hackney, Southwark, Ealing and other boroughs. Use the simple bill calculator below to estimate annual spending, then compare actual supplier quotes for your postcode and consumption. For a Spanish-language explanation, see our electricity and gas guide in Spanish.

UK Energy Price Cap — October to December 2026
Ofgem sets a price cap on the unit rates and standing charges that suppliers can charge households on covered default tariffs. For 1 October to 31 December 2026, its headline figure is £1,723 per year for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit, based on typical consumption. It is not a cap on your total bill: using more energy can mean paying more. Fixed-rate tariffs are not covered in the same way.
Across Great Britain, Ofgem's average Direct Debit rates for this quarter are 26.32p/kWh for electricity plus a 54.83p daily standing charge, and 7.97p/kWh for gas plus a 29.68p daily standing charge. Your rates can differ by postcode, meter and payment method. As of this quarter, electricity supplied under the price cap has no VAT until 31 March 2027; gas still includes 5% VAT.
See Ofgem's official energy price-cap rates for the latest figures. Ofgem updates the cap every three months, so verify the period before relying on any comparison.
How to Compare and Switch Energy Supplier
- Find your actual usage: check a recent electricity and gas bill for annual kWh consumption, your existing tariff name, unit prices and standing charges.
- Compare complete costs: request personalised quotes using your postcode and annual usage. Consider fixed versus variable tariffs, payment method, customer service, contract duration and any exit fees.
- Check the switching terms: if you choose to switch, the new supplier usually manages the transfer. Domestic switches should be completed within five working days, although you can request a later date. A fixed tariff may carry an early-exit fee.
Moving between suppliers should not require physical changes to your home wiring or interrupt your energy supply. If you have a genuine electrical fault, visit our London electrician information instead. For related heating or plumbing problems, see plumbers in London.

Frequently asked questions
Can I save money by switching energy suppliers in London?
Possibly. Savings depend on your current tariff, annual energy consumption, the available offers, standing charges and any exit fees. Compare personalised quotes rather than relying on a fixed savings estimate.
What is the Ofgem energy price cap for October to December 2026?
The headline figure is £1,723 a year for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit. It reflects typical consumption and is not a maximum total bill.
Are renewable electricity tariffs always cheaper?
No. Renewable credentials and price are separate considerations. Compare the full tariff and check the supplier’s explanation of any renewable electricity claims.
How long does it take to switch energy supplier?
A domestic supplier switch should usually be completed within five working days. Your new supplier will confirm the date. Fixed tariffs can have exit fees, and domestic customers generally have a 14-day cancellation period.
