What is IQ?
The intelligence quotient (IQ) is an indicative measure of certain cognitive abilities, such as logical reasoning, numerical aptitude, verbal comprehension and spatial awareness. It doesn't measure everything about a person: creativity, emotional intelligence, experience and persistence are left out, and they all matter a great deal in real life.
IQ is a relative score: it compares your performance with that of other people your age. By convention the population average is 100 and every 15 points equal one standard deviation. That means about two in three people have an IQ between 85 and 115.
How to read your score
| IQ | Level | Approximate share of the population |
|---|---|---|
| Below 85 | Below average | 16% |
| 85 – 99 | Low average | 34% |
| 100 – 114 | Average | 34% |
| 115 – 129 | High average | 14% |
| 130 or more | Very high | 2% |
What does this test measure?
Logical reasoning
Series, patterns and deductions: finding the rule that links the elements.
Numerical ability
Mental arithmetic, number sequences and problems with proportions.
Verbal comprehension
Analogies, synonyms and relationships between words and ideas.
Spatial perception
Picturing shapes, rotations and positions without seeing them.
How it works
This online IQ test is adjusted by age to give a fair and varied experience. When you start, the system picks 20 questions suited to your age, covering every difficulty level, and presents them from easiest to hardest. If you take the test more than once, it tries to show you new questions and avoid repeats.
The score is not just a count of correct answers: it also weighs the difficulty of each question you get right. Solving a hard question says more about your reasoning than solving an easy one. The result combines both methods so it stays stable and consistent with your percentage of correct answers.
Tips for taking the test
No distractions
Silence your phone and set aside 15 quiet minutes. One notification halfway through a logic series and you lose the thread.
Pen and paper
Taking notes is allowed. On numerical and spatial questions, writing down the steps avoids silly mistakes.
Rule options out
If you can't see the answer, first discard the options that don't fit. The right one often becomes obvious.
Well rested
Tiredness, hunger or stress can cost you several points. Take it when your mind is fresh.
IQ myths and facts
- "IQ never changes." It is fairly stable in adulthood, but education, reading, sleep and health all play a part. It varies more in childhood and adolescence.
- "A high IQ guarantees success." It helps, but persistence, social skills and opportunity matter as much or more at work.
- "IQ tests measure all of intelligence." They measure part of it: abstract reasoning and some academic skills. They don't measure creativity or practical wisdom.
- "Average scores rise over time." True: it's called the Flynn effect. During the 20th century scores rose by about 3 points per decade, which is why tests are recalibrated periodically.
How to train your mind
There's no trick to raise your IQ overnight, but some habits keep your brain in shape: reading every day, learning a language or an instrument, solving sudoku, chess and logic puzzles, exercising and sleeping well. Learning something new, in any language and at any age, is one of the best investments you can make.
Frequently asked questions
Is this IQ test accurate?
It gives an indicative estimate. The questions have calibrated difficulty and the score takes into account which questions you get right, not just how many, but no online test replaces a standardised assessment (such as the WAIS) given by a psychologist under controlled conditions.
Why does the score range from 70 to 130?
Twenty questions are not enough to measure the extremes of the scale precisely. The result is therefore limited to the range where a short test is reasonably informative, which is where the vast majority of people fall.
Why do you ask for my age?
The system picks questions suited to your age group. A teenager and an adult should not get exactly the same questions if the comparison is to be fair.
Can I take the test again?
Yes. The system remembers which questions you have seen and tries to show you new ones. Bear in mind that repeating it many times in a row measures practice, not ability.
How long does it take?
Between 10 and 15 minutes. There is no time limit: the timer is for your information only, so think each answer through calmly.
Do you store my data?
No email or sign-up is needed. Your name or nickname is only used to show you your result, and you can use a made-up one. Scores are saved anonymously, without your name, to improve the test.
